How does Michem HPMC improve the final product?

Thickening effect

Michem HPMC Increases the viscosity of the product and enhances the stability of the suspension. When used as a thickener in building applications, it prevents segregation and improves the cohesion of the formulation components.

Water retention

Michem HPMC Substantially reduces the loss of water when applied to water absorbing materials especially in high temperature environments, effectively prolong the opening time.

Slip resistance

Michem HPMC Increases the thixotropy of the product and prevents sagging to various substrates. Provides adhesives with better slip properties.

Open time & Tensile adhesion strength

Less skin formation and high water retention through Michem HPMC ensure better quality during longer working time on the field. Addition of Michem HPMC ensure longer open time, higher tensile adhesion strength and better workability.

Things you need to know about HPMC

HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) is a chemically modified cellulose polymer used extensively in various industrial applications, including construction, pharmaceuticals, and food production. It is a non-ionic, water-soluble polymer derived from natural cellulose, which undergoes a series of chemical reactions to produce a versatile compound with unique properties.

The viscosity of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) can vary widely depending on its molecular weight and degree of substitution. HPMC is often characterized by its viscosity in solution, typically measured in centipoises (cP) at a specific concentration (usually 2% in water) and temperature (usually 20°C).

Common viscosity grades of HPMC include:

- Low viscosity: 10 - 100 cP

- Medium viscosity: 400 - 20,000 cP

- High viscosity: 40,000 - 100,000 cP or more

For precise information, you would need to refer to the specific product's technical data sheet provided by the manufacturer.

HPMC has a wide range of applications across various industries due to its versatile properties. Here are some of the key applications: Pharmaceuticals, Food Industry, Construction, Personal Care and Cosmetics, Paints and Coatings, Adhesives, Detergents, Textiles.

HPMC  is a versatile additive in the construction field, providing numerous benefits to various construction materials. Here are the typical applications of HPMC in construction: Cement-Based Plasters and Renders, Tile Adhesives, Joint Compounds, Wall Putty, Self-Leveling Compounds, Gypsum-Based Products, EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems), Repair Mortars.

Selecting the right HPMC product involves considering factors such as the application field, required viscosity, solubility, and water retention properties. Refer to product technical specifications and application examples for guidance.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) enhances building materials by improving water retention, ensuring adequate hydration of cement for better curing and strength. It prevents premature drying and cracking, serving as a thickener, water retention agent, and performance enhancer in dry mix mortar, tile adhesives, wall putty, plasters, and renders.

The main functions of HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) in tile adhesive are as follows:

Thickening: HPMC acts as a thickening agent, increasing the viscosity of the tile adhesive, making it easier to apply and handle.

Water Retention: HPMC effectively retains water, preventing the adhesive from drying out too quickly. This ensures that the adhesive has enough time to hydrate and cure properly, enhancing bond strength.

Extended Open Time: By adjusting the amount of HPMC, the open time of the tile adhesive (the period during which it remains effective for bonding tiles after application) can be extended, improving work efficiency.

Anti-Slip: HPMC enhances the anti-slip properties of the tile adhesive, preventing tiles from moving during installation, ensuring accurate placement.

Increased Bond Strength: By improving the rheological and water retention properties of the adhesive, HPMC increases the final bond strength.

Improved Freeze-Thaw Stability: HPMC helps enhance the freeze-thaw stability of the tile adhesive, allowing it to maintain good bonding performance even in low-temperature environments.

These functions make HPMC an indispensable component in tile adhesives.

The price of HPMC varies depending on its grade, purity, and application field. Specific pricing should be obtained from suppliers. Please contact our sales team for the latest HPMC price admin@michemicals.com.
